A well-known kitchen ingredient, turmeric is not just your ordinary spice. Turmeric spice popular as a part of curry dishes is almost always found in superfood lists because of its many health benefitsranging from its antibiotic properties to boosting memory to even combating some cancer types. And according to a study, there’s one more benefit we can add to the already long list: turmeric can improve your cardiovascular health as much as physical exercise!
Turmeric and the Cardiovascular System
The study, which was published in the American Journal of Cardiology, claims that turmeric extract can lower risks of heart attack by up to 56%. This recent study supports the earlier research published in 2012 in the Nutrition Research journal in which it says that eating the spice or taking supplements can be as effective as an aerobic exercise in improving your heart health. Just imagine a pinch of turmeric and its effects to the cardiovascular system can be compared to an hour of brisk walking or jogging. If your main goal for exercising is to improve your health, this may be what you have been waiting for.
Curcumin, the Magical Ingredient
The health benefits of turmeric can be attributed to its primary polyphenol, known as curcumin. Not just responsible for the spice’s color, curcumin has active properties that can improve vascular function, particularly in postmenopausal women. At this time of a woman’s life, heart problems could easily arise and thus become a real health concern.
How to Take Advantage of Turmeric for Your Cardiovascular Health
Here are some important points to bear in mind if you plan to use turmeric for your heart health:
Older adults who suffer from arthritis need to keep moving to be functionally independent. But in an examination of a goal that is daunting for most of this aging population, a new Northwestern Medicine study found that performing even a third of the recommended activity is beneficial.
Federal guidelines suggest achieving 150 minutes of moderate activity per week to prevent premature death and serious illness, however only one in 10 older American adults with arthritis in their knees meet these guidelines. Northwestern Medicine researchers wanted to determine a less overwhelming activity goal to get this population up and moving, and 45 minutes per week was that magic number. More
(Natural News) They’re a popular mealtime beverage for millions of people who believe that by drinking them, they’re avoiding the pitfalls of sugar consumption. But diet soda pop is neither healthy nor safe, as research continues to show that its primary sweetening constituent in most cases, aspartame, is a damaging neurotoxin that can lead to a host of chronic health issues, including cancer.
The largest study of its kind ever conducted on aspartame was put together by researchers from the University of Iowa. They looked at 60,000 women who consumed aspartame-laden diet beverages over the course of 10 years and found that those who consume two or more diet drinks per day are significantly more prone than other women to develop cardiovascular disease — and to die from it.
The paper compared the health outcomes of women who consume diet beverages to those who don’t, observing that those who do are 30 percent more likely to suffer some kind of cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke. Among those who suffer such a fate, those who consume aspartame are 50 percent more likely to die from it compared to non-diet beverage drinkers. A promising compound which has been shown to significantly slow the aging process in mice might be tried on humans as early as next month, scientists say. If the trials work out well it would be the first genuine anti-aging drug to appear on the markets.According to Japan News, Researchers at Keio University and Washington University in St. Louis are set to begin first clinical trials of the compound known as nicotinamide mono nucleotide (NMN), previously tested on mice.
NMN is a substance produced within the bodies of living things which may be also found in a variety of food products, such as milk.
Scientists believe in NMN’s potential to extend human life as experiments on mice showed that the compound has the ability to counter the declines in metabolism, eyesight and glucose intolerance which come into play as we get older. It was also found that the compound activated proteins called sirtuins, whose production decreases due to the aging process. More
The world’s first anti-ageing drug will be tested on humans next year in trials which could see diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s consigned to distant memory.
Scientists now believe that it is possible to actually stop people growing old as quickly and help them live in good health well into their 110s and 120s.
Although it might seem like science fiction, researchers have already proven that the diabetes drug metformin extends the life of animals, and the Food and Drug Administration in the US has now given the go ahead for a trial to see if the same effects.
If successful it will mean that a person in their 70s would be as biologically healthy as a 50 year old. It could usher in a new era of ‘geroscience’ where doctors would no longer fight individual conditions like cancer, diabetes and dementia, but instead treat the underlying mechanism – ageing.
Scottish ageing expert Professor Gordon Lithgow of the Buck Institute for Research on Ageing in California, is one of the study advisors.
“If you target an ageing process and you slow down ageing then you slow down all the diseases and pathology of ageing as well,” he said “That’s revolutionary. That’s never happened before.
